We are all uniquely woven with the structural presence of our lessons. With every lesson experienced, there lies a testimony behind every individual. Being a witness to my own adversity and living in silence due to public acceptance, has led me towards a path of destruction. I no longer had the strength or the will to live, and I found myself yearning for spiritual deliverance. My lessons have been a journey of despair, however, through my trials of human error, my lessons helped me to reach within and listen to the whispers of God’s guidance. Being an active listener to God’s voice allowed me to trust and have faith in his purpose for my life. God had exposed me with all the possibilities of spiritual reformation and has taught me humility, forgiveness, selflessness, unconditional love and understanding to those who differ from my own perceptions. Realizing God’s truth and his purpose for me facilitated the need to give back to those who live a life without a sense of belonging or in search of feeling spiritually liberated.
Touching those near and far, here are their testimonies…

There comes a time for each of us when we need inspiration, a reminder that we are here for a purpose and that we are part of something greater than ourselves. I have always been a very spiritual person. I have always felt a close connection to God. Still, several years ago I found myself in the Dark night of the soul. I felt I could not hear God’s direction and I lacked the faith necessary to carry me out of this dark time.God is always with us, and always knows what we need. Delsie was one of my closest childhood friends, but I had not spoken to her for years. For reasons I may never understand, she reached out to me when I needed her most. I was shocked to hear from her, but made plans to meet with her to talk. What I thought would just be a chance to catch up actually turned into an opportunity for me to rediscover my spiritual roots and start anew. I did not tell Delsie what I was going through, I did not have to. During the course of our time together, Delsie’s innate spiritual energy began to lift me out of the depression that was surrounding me. Her spiritual guidance and advice touched me in the deepest recesses of my soul, and awakened the faith that I thought was gone forever. She reminded me of who I am in God and her pure faith inspired and uplifted me. Everything she said was heartfelt and it was clear to me that spirit was speaking through her. Since then, I have often reached out to her in my times of spiritual transformation. She has always helped me to take the leap necessary for change and growth. Delsie never pushes her beliefs on you, but has a way of helping you to discover your own truths. I would highly recommend her as a spiritual teacher and advisor. She will help you to discover that which is already

I met Delsie Howey at the Jewish Theological Seminary. We were co-workers. We became friends instantly. I was a single mother of 7 children and I used to go to Delsie to tell her about my situation. She was a great shoulder to cry on. She never judged me on my situation. We would pray together as well. The year of 2002 was very difficult. I couldn’t afford to get my children Christmas gifts. Delsie ordered over $300 worth of clothes for my kids and I was to pay her back with my income taxes but they were confiscated by the government. I had owed student loans. When I told Delsie that I wasn’t able to pay her back, she didn’t get upset and she didn’t make me feel bad about it. She never mentioned the fact that I owed her the money. I will never forget that. No one has ever stepped up and help me the way Delsie did that year. Not only did she help me financially, she helped me mentally. I thank God for letting us cross paths at that time in my life, because I really needed her. I will never forget what she did for me. Through her selfless actions, she showed me how to help other people over the years.

For some of us, one may feel dejected, repressed, confused and unwanted. The challenges in the workforce and the stresses at home have the ability to add pressures on ourselves which create anxiety and cause us to feel discouraged. Daily struggles turn into never ending battles, where the enjoyment of life remains so elusive and the urgency for guidance is a welcome salvation. From all this depression, personal possessions which we hold so tight, turns out to be the only things that comfort us and seems to matter the most. This was my life prior to meeting Delsie.
Born into a Catholic family and attending weekly Sunday church mass, was pretty much the extent of my faith in God.  Praying seemed to be a waste of time, where I felt my wishes fell on deaf ears. It wasn’t until later in my life when I crossed paths with Delsie on my two hour routine commute to work, that exposed me to a whole new meaning of life.  In the beginning, we would meet after work on the train and have our casual discussions about religion and our cultural backgrounds. Months later, through our multiple spiritual counseling; Delsie saw that my current life was upside down and I needed clarity in order to achieve my goals. Delsie planted the seed of hope and directed my sight towards the importance of love. She stated that “I mattered”, regardless of anyone’s perception. She asked, how can you recognize God if you struggle with self-recognition? Before you develop a relationship with anyone, including God, you must first develop a relationship with yourself. She created a simple foundation…start with the power of prayer excluding religious principle. Delsie told me to reach within and address my doubt with the higher power. With patience, she said, you will hear the voice of guidance. Expressing examples of her past, she explained how hatred, possessions, and negative thoughts were only obstacles that caused self-destruction and would haul spiritual growth. Experiencing a small taste of her examples compelled me to take part in Delsie’s mission. Through daily prayers/conversations with God, my eyes have opened up to new beginnings of what matters most and made me realize my worth. My faith is still a work-in-progress. Now and then I catch myself drifting away from God and I reflect on the process of my spiritual growth in order to walk forward in faith. I try to make a difference in someone’s life, including myself, but like anyone, I experience good and bad days. However, with a little bit of faith and Delsie as my mentor, I believe there aren’t any barriers that can prevent me from achieving my goals of spiritual fulfillment.

“Bridging the Divide”

My name is Eric Serrano. I am writing this testimonial because my own philosophy, the system of my beliefs, can only be affirmed in my act to speak here now and because my own principals leave me with little reason not to. I join C.O.L.O.R.S. in this dialogue, only in that I am in full agreement with the acts and efforts of this organization that has allowed my voice to be heard.

You see, I am an atheist, and not because something is wrong with me or because there is something that is missing. In both the quality of my character and my capacity for understanding, I find myself to be quite whole. I have had many conversations with people from different backgrounds and with different beliefs and still hold firmly to mine. By and large, we have agreed to disagree. And on my end, the only feeling that I hold on to, one that should be universal, is the belief that our differences should not keep us away from helping one another.
To some, my words are arrogant; a disobedient refusal to exist in humility and in service to whichever energy that they would call “the one.” To them, I am void of understanding, and their belief is that I cannot truly believe in anything. They share a belief that this “one” is IN everything and to not believe in him is to miss out on a key ingredient to that which we are all a part of. These accusations could not be further from the truth. Like you, I too can feel the power in things. I believe in them. I believe in language that can aid things, in joy, and in peace. I believe that no hands are too big or too small to be intertwined and that the sun is not easily impressed by what we believe to be “new.” I also believe that you and I can be separated by one opinion, mostly; one lens through which we see things and one body through which we can experience them. What you would call spiritual governance, I call morality. What you know as sin, I have come to feel as guilt. These are our beliefs, things we feel and some of us would want to ignore because we categorize them under different names. They believe that these beliefs are separate from what it is we do and what it is we can do for one another.
Now I would not profess to know about anything with enough certainty that I would ostracize the multitude for the sake of being so sure. I can be satisfied with the possibility that I am wrong to you. I can be content to not know. But I cannot be satisfied to know while ignoring the belief, that WE, differences aside, cannot be right together. We do not have to believe in the same God to agree that women are being battered, that bullying is detrimental to the growth in a child’s life and should be stopped, or that we all tend to speak to our differences in fear instead of recognizing the similarities across the divide that can give us hope.
I am writing this, after much deliberation, because I do not want the claims that are pushed against me as a “non-believer” to hold precedence over who I am as a human being. And if I am unwilling to engage in these conversations with you all, to express how I feel as someone who does not believe, than I am subject to all of your criticisms, literature and ultimately circumstances that you would want me to fall under. I would not have a voice. I would not be able to correct myself in your view.
There are those who I have met, and I am sure many out there, who will say I will pray for you. I can appreciate this gesture, as I understand it to be a request to your God to help me recognize what you believe to be the righteous path. Still, all I ask is for a dialogue between us to see where we are the same, not different. All I would ask is that we disarm one another with what we can share and that we are open to finding out how we can still work together as brothers and sisters. C.O.L.O.R.S. shares these same goals.
This organization is not built to change you. It is geared to bring change. I am not a member, not in the belief of a higher being, but I do not feel as adamant as someone who does not believe in God to measure my explanations for the universe against yours. Still, and with all sense of clarity, I know that this organization is putting change before all of its core beliefs. To not recognize this would be to deny others of what they need and to perform an act of treason against my own conscience. Our actions speak louder than the beliefs we hold dear to.
Without opening myself to talk about C.O.L.O.R.S., I would not have met a remarkable woman in Delsie Howey or the beautiful people who support this organization. I would not have allowed myself to hear my own voice, to tell you right now that what we are not sharing is a matter of opinion. And that what we can gain from understanding our differences can only result in unity.
I believe that love is the great unifier and I believe in it. I cannot explain it, cannot control it, but it is one of the very few things that I care not to. The topic of love is something we all share, are overwhelmed by, and recognize as having the power to change. The love that this organization promotes is undeniable. For love’s greatest lesson is to teach you who you are. In its common language, we can better teach one another who WE are.
And if we choose to speak, on opposite sides at times, all that should be asked is that the construct of a bridge begin today, on both sides, so that people can meet. So that all of us, at the very least, can choose to speak.

Jesse SapersteinI live with Asperger’s syndrome and see the unnecessary suffering that is created when people do not embrace each other’s differences. Therefore, it is incredible that C.O.L.O.R.S. thrives in Dutchess County and has united people of different backgrounds. They were kind enough to attend an anti-bullying walk where I was invited to speak and am enthralled by their raw YouTube video. It will be my mission to try and remain involved while ensuring the organization continues to receive the support it deserves.
